Lesson #13 – Taking Your Time and Start Slowly

Note: This content was originally written by Titimowse ("The Professor") and published on the old Cozyacademy.com over 10 years ago, a site that is no longer live and, as a result, the great wealth of knowledge it provides for the adult webmasters community was nearly lost. I recovered this article from an old archive and no part of this work belongs to me. I republished it here for the benefit of the adult community.

At this moment, at this time, the adult Internet makes money. To be fair to non-adult ventures, porn and the net are a perfect match. Porn is not a public business and the Internet is not a physical setting. Porn and sex are one of humanity’s oldest commodities. Regardless of centuries of social and legal obstacles, people have always proven to be willing to pay for their smut. When the Internet opened the door to sexual entertainment, it did it without invading the privacy of it’s clientele. Porn works on the web because the web delivers it in a way that is perfectly safe, perfectly legal and supremely easier than any other medium or venue. Almost anyone in today’s society understands that Internet porn is a profitable business. What many of them don’t understand is that not everyone who runs an adult business on the web is going to get rich.

Another misguided belief adult Internet newbies have is that this is an easy vocation. They believe all they have to do is open a paysite and boom, they’re suddenly sitting by the pool of their mansion, drinking champagne with their favorite porn star. Even those who were successful in print or video porn think all they have to do is open a place on the web and the money rolls right in. Both the experienced and inexperienced invest precious time and dollars on running without first learning to walk. So many fall and never get back up.

If you are new to Internet porn, you are new to Internet porn. No matter your previous experience, online adult entertainment is a business like no other and everyone begins at square one. To start out with paid hosting and heaping amounts spent on site design, content and merchant accounts is frankly, an unrealistic gamble. If most brick-and-mortar businesses lose money in their first year of operation, why would the adult Internet be any different? There are so many unseen factors one encounters in this business; even the most experienced adult Internet Company can fall prey to downfall. The map of this world is not yet finished. Even the pioneers of online porn have had to change their methods as the market changes because the market is evolving before their eyes.

Fortunately for the adult Internet newbie, they have an advantage over almost all others involved in e-commerce on the non-adult Internet. Adult Internet newbies can dip their collective toes in and test the waters without getting wet. Adult Internet novices can start up in this industry with little or no money invested and earn while they learn. They can get free hosting, free content and promote sponsor programs with only the investment of time. They get a hands-on education using free services without ever having to apply for grants and without ever having to sacrifice the income from their present jobs. They can invest money when they’re ready.

Some will learn rapidly and other will take years to understand the tangles of the adult web. The point being, knowledge of how this business works doesn’t come easily and you won’t get far without knowledge of how this business works. Granted, there are amazing resources and tutorials available to a new adult webmaster but they won’t help you if you don’t take the time to explore them. So many in this business only look for help after they’ve had their first big crisis. They are like teenagers with their first driver’s license. They have to have their first automobile accident before they understand the scope of the responsibility.

If you think the way to get started in the adult Internet is by opening a paysite, you are wrong. Don’t quit your day job. Don’t invest your savings. Don’t risk ostracism by announcing to your friends and family you are now entering the world of Internet porn.

Do get an account with a free adult host. Do apply for free content with providers and sponsors. Do take the time to understand traffic statistics, sponsor promotion and porn trends by reading industry articles, lessons and tutorials. Do make associations with your new peer group by posting in adult webmaster message boards and chat rooms. You can do all of these things at your own pace and without cost. Cozy Academy is happy to be your starting point for the wise newbie who knows to go slow.
